Starting A Nonprofit: Three Key Things You Need To Do Before You Begin
If you're considering starting a non-profit, there are a few things you should do before diving into paperwork or naming your organization. As a non-profit founder, executive director, and speaker on all things social impact service and leadership, I have learned from experience that there are three key things you should do before beginning a non-profit. In this post, I will walk you through those three things and provide insight into why they are essential to the success of your non-profit.

Understand The Need You Are Addressing
The first thing you need to do before starting a non-profit is to deeply understand the need you are trying to address. This means taking the time to research the root causes of the problem you want to solve. You want to know who is affected by the problem, what the underlying root causes are, and what other issues are interconnected to the problem you want to address.
To gain a better understanding of the problem, you need to do extensive research. The Internet is an excellent resource, but I highly recommend finding experts in your community or around the world and talking to them in person. Gain the knowledge that they have acquired firsthand by doing the work you're trying to do. Only when you understand the problem you're trying to solve can you develop a mission statement and actions that will effectively address the problem.

Study The Landscape Of Other Organizations
The second thing you want to do before starting a non-profit is to study the landscape of other organizations. Determine what other organizations are doing in the community to address the problem you want to solve. Are there any gaps in the services or programs being provided? How can your organization fill those gaps and work collaboratively with other organizations to create a more significant impact?
By studying the landscape of other organizations, you can better understand the resources that are available, the challenges that exist, and how you can create a unique value proposition for your non-profit.

Develop A Strong Business Plan
The third thing you want to do before starting a non-profit is to develop a strong business plan. This plan should outline your non-profit's goals, strategies, and tactics for achieving success. Your business plan should include your mission statement, target audience, marketing strategy, financial projections, and an evaluation plan.
Your business plan should be a living document that you can refer to often as you build your non-profit. It will help you stay on track and ensure that you are meeting your goals and objectives.
